U.S. didn’t always support Mandela
To the editor:
The French refer to the United States as “the great hypocrites.”
Nelson Mandela died this week. Across the USA on television, much deserved praise for the man who brought African dignity and nobility to the world stage. I have not heard anyone mention that during Mandela’s struggle, the U.S. considered him a “communist terrorist” and was a great supporter of the minority racist apartheid government. In New Hampshire in the 1970s Gov. Meldrim Thompson went to South Africa and embraced the evil. Ronald Reagan, the American hero, actively supported the enemies of Mandela. So it is easy to now praise democracy in South Africa when the USA did everything possible to stymie it. Of course, much of our press never mentions this.
