New Conant hall of fame taking shape

Nominations sought for potential fall 2014 inaugural class

Conant High School’s all-time great athletes and teams have always had a special place reserved for them, whether it’s on banners on the walls of the Pratt, display cases in the high school, or in the hearts and minds of the community. As early as next fall, however, they may have a central location to house their memories and memorabilia. Conant athletic boosters Dennis Casey and Wayne Desrosiers, along with Conant athletic director Rick Simoneau, are spearheading an effort to create a Conant Athletic Hall of Fame.

“The idea of a hall of fame is something that has been kicked around for years,” Casey said, but it was just an idea. However, when ConVal High School started its own hall of fame in 2011, Casey and the boosters took notice, and when Mascenic started their own last year – “That was the straw that broke the camel’s back,” Casey said, half-joking.

With space and funding at a premium at Conant, Simoneau said the hall would most likely be housed in the entryway to the Pratt Auditorium, on prominent display for all to see at basketball games. And as big as basketball is at Conant, the organizers stressed that the hall of fame would not be too hoops-centric.

“Conant is known as a basketball school – it just is,” said Desrosiers, “but we want to be able to recognize the other great athletes in the other sports.”

And it wouldn’t be just individual athletes, either – the plan is for each inducted class to include no more than five individual players, a coach and a contributing individual (someone who didn’t necessarily play or coach at Conant, but still found a way to contribute to the success of Conant athletics). The inaugural class will be a bit larger, of course, with over 100 years of untapped athletic achievements to draw upon; the next move for the hall of fame committee is to take nominations for that inaugural class. According to the newly-drafted bylaws, eligibility will extend to those who graduated from Conant at least ten years ago and can be considered “truly great.” If you’d like to make a nomination or otherwise get involved with the Conant Athletic Hall of Fame, contact Dennis Casey at or Wayne Desrosiers at
