Last time the WLC and Epping girls basketball teams squared off, it was a fight to the finish in which the Warriors narrowly escaped with a 36-35 win on the road. The two teams played again on Saturday in Wilton, and any thoughts that the rematch would come down to the final play again were quickly erased. It was another contentious game that saw Epping coach Tim Hopley hit with a technical foul within the first five minutes, but that was about the only intensity the Blue Devils could muster, and the Warriors ran away with it.

“We’ve been working on our defense a lot and trying to be more aggressive and gamble more, and it seems to be working,” WLC senior guard Sami Bosquet after the game. Bosquet had to sit the majority of the previous Epping game in foul trouble, but she had no such problems on Saturday.Time and again, the backcourt of Bosquet, Ally Schwab and Tesa Simpson was able to harry the Epping ballhandlers with a 3/4 court press, which worked to perfection.

“Tonight, I think our defense dictated the game,” WLC head coach Denny Claire said. “We got quite a few turnovers and we moved the ball pretty well. We’re not a great shooting team, so we have to rely on pressure because we really don’t have those outside shooters. I think we’re working hard. You saw the pressure. We’re trying to get tips, we’re trying to get hands in the way – a lot of little things we’re trying to do.”

The Warriors didn’t have to worry much about outside shooting on Saturday, as most of their points in transition, with the turnovers leading to fast break points.

“We’ve definitely been trying to push it up the floor more so that we can get the easy points,” Bosquet said.

Bosquet scored 11 in the game to lead the Warriors. Once the Blue Devils settled down and stopped creating fast break points for the Warriors, WLC center Rachel Graves was able to take over in the halfcourt offense, scoring 10 points. Graves, along with forwards Olivia McGettigan and Kelsey Randlett, controlled the paint for the Warriors.

“My big girls played a little better tonight,” Claire said.

After leaving the game early in the first half with a leg injury, Randlett was able to return to the game and contribute in a big way, making a huge block and scoring seven points. Ally Schwab also scored seven. The Warriors were without guard Sarah Holka, who was a major factor in the last game against Epping, scoring two key baskets down the stretch.

After an 0-4 start, the Warriors have turned things around, winning six of their last eight to make it up to .500 at 6-6, right in the middle of the DIV pack.

“We’ve started to pull it together and work well as a team,” Bosquet said.

Claire agreed, to a point.

“We’re kind of getting there, but not getting there as fast as I want us to get there,” Claire said.

The Warriors face 10-1 Sunapee tonight at 7 p.m.; the Lakers thumped WLC 62-33 in the first game of the season, a chippy affair that the Warriors have not forgotten.

“We’re going to try to calm it down,” Bosquet said, “but we’re going to work as hard as we can. We’re going for the win; we’re going to work really hard in practice and work on what we need to in order to stay with them.”

Now, it’s just a matter of everything coming together for WLC.

“I think our intensity is really going to be key,” Claire said. “We’re just going to keep practicing shooting and hope that we’re going to have one of those games where we light it up. They’re all capable of doing it.”
