Haase has first taste of New England meet

Conant junior Justin Haase gained valuable experience and solidified his spot as one of the top returning shotput throwers in New England coming into spring and looking ahead to next year.

Haase placed twenty-fifth overall, throwing 44 feet, 2 inches, at this year’s New England championship meet, held March 1 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.

“I didn’t do as well as I would have liked, but that was mostly due to not having a meet in over a month,” reflected Haase in a recent interview.

Being the only member of the Conant indoor track team to qualify for the New England championships meant a lot of one-on-one training sessions with coach Erin Kelly. “Having gone a month without competing, we knew it would be hard for him to throw his best,” said Kelly.

Although Haase would have liked to have a stronger showing at New England’s, his indoor season was a success overall. “I’m very happy with the way this season went. I never thought I would make it to the new England meet,” said Haase.

As the snow slowly begins to melt and temperatures climb, the focus for Haase shifts to the outdoor track season. “I think he is excited to start throwing discus again, it will take some pressure of off just throwing the shot put all the time,” said Kelly.

Haase has had his sights on breaking Adam Getty’s school shot put record of 48 feet, 8 inches since the beginning of his junior campaign, and his goals for the spring season remain lofty, “My goals for the spring season are to through over 50 feet, win the division three championship in shot put and go to New England’s again,” said Haase.

Kelly believes Haase has the tools to achieve his goals, saying “Justin is the most hardworking kid – the easiest type of kid to coach.”

With a strong will to improve and three seasons remaining in his high school career, Haase has a great shot at rewriting the Conant record books before graduating next spring.
