Milers wrap up winter race series
Avery Traffie of New Ipswich takes first place in final contest of the season
The Monadnock Milers held the final race of the annual winter chiller series on March 22.
The final race was a 5.7 mile course beginning and ending at the ConVal High School parking lot. The chilly temperature did not deter any of the 66 entrants from finishing the course with a smile.
Avery Traffie took first overall, ending his Chiller campaign by beating rival Brad Fors one last time. The two runners vied for top five finishes throughout the series, finishing one-two in race number four held in New Ipswich as well as the race this past Saturday.
The annual Chiller series was a success with around 70 entrants for each race. “All of this year’s races were huge compared to previous years. We had over 130 different runners from across the region participate in the series,” said race organizer Ginger Smith. “We started this series with ten to fifteen runners eleven years ago,” she recalled.
The top male and female finisher from each race was awarded a pint of Ben and Jerry’s while numerous other prizes were given out via raffle. “We do have awards, but it’s all about having a good time and keeping people running through the winter months,” said Smith.
With the cold winter months coming to an end, the milers shift their focus to helping support local races throughout the Monadnock region during the spring and summer months. The milers will hold three track meets and a summer camp at ConVal High School, dates to be determined.
