The Conant girls tennis team suffered its first loss of the season to undefeated Moultonborough on Tuesday.

The Orioles top three players, Shannon Bennett, Allina Bennett, and Courtney Dillon, dropped their singles matches to tough Moultonborough opponents. Ashley Rogers and Hannah Clark collected wins for the Orioles, before Hannah Duncan dropped the last singles match of the afternoon.

Going into doubles play, the Orioles needed to win all three matches in order to take the victory. The duo of Shannon and Allina Bennett was victorious in the first doubles match, keeping the Orioles’ hopes alive. Unfortunately, the duos of Clark and Dillon and Duncan and Rogers dropped their matches, giving Moultonborough the victory by a score of 6-3.

Coming into the contest, the Orioles had not lost a match on the season, and had rarely been challenged.

“We learned a lot today. It was a close match,” said head coach Jody Baker. “It was really good tennis all afternoon. It is important for our team to see good competition.”

Many of the singles matches were closer than the final scores indicated, something that Baker was pleased with.

“Coming into this match our goal if we didn’t win was to learn what we could do better next time.” In all likelihood, the next time that Conant would face Moultonborough would be in the playoffs when the stakes are high.

“We could see them in the playoffs,” said Baker. “We need to learn to close out close matches. Nobody gave up today, everyone hung in and performed their best. We walked away knowing we can play with that team.”
