ConVal made a solid playoff run this season, but they ran unto a buzzsaw on Saturday to put an end to any title hopes. After soundly defeating John Stark on Thursday, the Cougars traveled over to the seacoast on Saturday, losing to Portsmouth 9-0.

ConVal started off on the right foot against John Stark on Thursday. Senior pitcher Ivon Clough was his usual dominant self, blowing the ball past Generals hitters for a ten-strikeout two-hitter with no walks. In fact, only one Stark batter was able to reach second base.

Senior catcher Tyler Aborn got the scoring started for ConVal. After a walk and a hit batsman set the table for the Cougars, Aborn came up and ripped a single to right field that allowed two runs to score.

The ConVal defense was exceptional that day as well, committing only one error, thanks in no small part to the stellar play of first baseman Joe Edwards. Edwards played a great game at first, leaping to corral several errant throws and chasing down a Stark baserunner in a pickle after a successful Clough pickoff.

In the sixth inning, the floodgates opened for ConVal, as the Cougars chased Generals ace Tyler Keim after he loaded the bases and walked Will McPhee to plate one runner. Moments later, Clough came to the plate and battled before absolutely destroying a ball to deep right center that would have been long gone if ConVal had a fence in the outfield, rather than a hill. The monster shot prompted some bystanders to remark that it was the longest ball hit at ConVal in “at least three years.”

Mathias Fressilli also had an RBI single before Clough buckled down on the mound and retired the side in the seventh, striking out the last batter and celebrating with a mighty fist pump.

The celebration would come to an end on Saturday, however, as the Cougars ran up against No. Portsmouth and their ace Joe Hagan held ConVal hitless into the fifth inning on the way to a 9-0 shutout victory. Edwards started the game for the Cougars and broke up the no-hitter in the fifth with a single.
