The Conant girls soccer team fell 2-0 at home during their season opener to the Stevens Cardinals on Friday. Coming off a winless campaign last fall, the Orioles began their season with high hopes of notching some wins this year. Based on Friday’s game, the Orioles will almost certainly improve on last year’s record as the defense appeared much improved, and, although still a young group, the team showed good chemistry for this early in the season.

For the first fifteen minutes of the game, the Orioles were put under immense pressure from the Cardinals’ constant offensive onslaught. It proved too much for the young Oriole defenders, and Stevens was able to net a goal, making it 1-0 early in the contest.

“For a lot of my girls, this was their first ever varsity game, they didn’t know what to expect,” said head coach Whit Aldrich.

At halftime, Aldrich urged the girls to shoot more. “I told them to be selfish. I’ll tell you if you are being too selfish. Until then you need to shoot,” he said.

Coming out of halftime, the Orioles continued to play relaxed and tighten up their defense. There was only one defensive miscommunication in the second half, leading to an easy breakaway goal for the Cardinals, making it

“You have to tip your hat to [Stevens], they broke us down and got the goal,” said Aldrich, who was happy with the girls’ performance for the first game of the season.

“I have lots of freshman starting; I have 12 on the roster. It’ll take a few games for the freshman to work themselves in. I want the freshman to go out and have fun, while learning the game,” said Aldrich.

After the game, as the Oriole players took their cleats off and prepared to support the junior varsity team, they shared their thoughts on the loss.

“We played really well at the end of last season, and that continued today,” said junior Esther Varnum following the game.

Alysha Smith, the Orioles only senior, shared Varnum’s optimism, saying, “We played well today. We worked together as a team.” Smith did see room for improvement going forward, adding, “We do need to take more shots on goal and we need to be able to hold the ball longer on offense.”

On Tuesday, the Orioles will face a tough test when they travel to Fall Mountain to take on the Wildcats.

“Fall Mountain is always good. Now that the girls know what to expect during a varsity game, I want them to go out and play good defense again,” he said.

Varnum remembers the Wildcats beating the Orioles in a tiebreaker last fall.

“There’s some motivation. We can get them this year,” she said.
