6th annual Hoops for Steve this Saturday
The sixth annual Hoops for Steve fund-raiser will be held at Pratt Auditorium on Saturday.
The event, in memory of Stephen Record, will be held from 1-4 p.m. in the Conant gymnasium.
Record was a three-sport athlete at Conant before an automobile accident on Dec. 27, 2007 took his life at the age of 16 years old.
Hoops for Steve was the first event created in honor of his memory. All proceeds from the event go to the Stephen Curtis Record scholarship fund.
Each participant will shoot 21 free throws, Record’s Conant basketball jersey number, and either pledge a flat amount to donate or per free throw made. People can also have sponsors to cover the donation.
There will also be a three-point competition, knock out games, tennis ball toss and other events.
In years past, there has been a basketball game at night on the day of the afternoon event. But this year, the fund-raiser was run in conjunction with the Conant and Mascenic varsity double header on Feb. 5.
In the over five years since record’s passing, about $80,000 has been raised for the scholarship fund. Each June, a male and female Conant graduate receives a $5,000 scholarship from the fund.
