Balanced attack fuels Conant win

LeBlanc gives up two hits over six, offense scores in four out of seven frames

Entering the season, the Conant baseball team knew it was going to be a difficult schedule to start.

The first two and a half weeks were going to tell coach Brian Royal a lot about his team.

With Wednesday’s 8-1 win over Monadnock — a semifinalist along with Conant last year — the Orioles improved to 2-0 and will look to keep the momentum going through the remainder of the tough five-game stretch.

Today, Conant travels to Hopkinton — the defending Division III champions and the team that ended the Orioles’ season last year — in a rescheduled game from last Friday. And to end this week, Conant plays host to Campbell on Friday, the team that lost to Hopkinton in the title game last June. The teams will also play again a week from Wednesday, while a trip to Mascenic on Monday should be a close one simply because of the rivalry.

So a good start could mean a lot in terms of positioning later in the season.

“If we can win these next four games, I think we’ll be sitting pretty,” said Royal.

Senior Josh LeBlanc allowed just two hits over six innings to go along with five strikeouts. The one Monadnock run, scored in the second, was unearned.

The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Devin Drouin. Following the Huskies only run of the game, the score remained tied at one until the fifth when Conant added two runs on a LeBlanc sac fly and Ryan Aho’s bases-loaded hit-batter .

Two more runs scored in the sixth on a Devin Springfield walk with the bases full and LeBlanc’s RBI single.

And the Orioles added three more in the seventh, two scoring on hit-batters with the bases loaded.

Freshman leadoff hitter Kyle Dupuis went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. LeBlanc finished with two hits and two RBIs and Ryan Carey also had two hits and two runs scored.

“They hit the ball a lot better than they did in the first game,” said Royal.
