Boynton, SMS win awards

Area schools recognized for sportsmanship at AD meeting

While wins, playoff appearances and state championships are nice, the awards South Meadow and Boynton middle schools recently received are what really make the schools’ athletic directors proud.

On April 12 at the annual spring middle school athletic directors’ meeting, the two schools were recognized with the yearly sportsmanship awards. SMS took home the award for Class M and Boynton was the Class S recipient.

“I just think it’s a great testimony to what out athletic department is doing here,” said SMS Athletic Director Tod Silegy.

It was the second year in a row that Boynton received the award, which is voted on by all the athletic directors in each class.

“To win it back-to-back I was quite surprised and very pleased that the other coaches and athletic directors think that way about us,” said Boynton AD Bruce McComish.

For SMS, it was the second time it took home the sportsmanship honor. The school won just two years ago.

Athletic directors cannot vote for their own school and must rank their top three choices. The awards cover the spring season of 2012 through the most recent winter.

Of course both McComish and Silegy want to see their teams have success on the field, but having their groups recognized for the little things tells them that it is not all about the wins and losses for the coaches and athletes.

“There’s a sense of pride in what we do,” said Silegy. “And at least in our division, I think we’re the role model.”

And the credit goes directly to the coaches and athletes.

“In my opinion, I’ve got the best coaching staff in the state,” said McComish. “And the kids give 100 percent on the field.

Over the last year, the schools have had quite a bit of success. SMS won the boys soccer title in the fall, as well as the boys and girls cross-country crowns. Boynton won the baseball championship last spring.

The sportsmanship awards were first given in the spring of 2008.
