ConVal scores 3 in 7th for win
Hautanen’s double, HR fuels victory
Entering Friday’s trip to John Stark, the ConVal softball team had not trailed this season.
But that all changed, as the Cougars found themselves down 3-1 going into the seventh. ConVal had been held to just one hit up to that point and were in serious danger of dropping its first game of the year.
The seventh started with an infield hit from senior Marena Brock and a single to left off the bat of senior Lauren Mackey, but that is when things got interesting. The throw from the outfield was off line, allowing Brock to take third and Mackey to move up to second, but it hit junior Courtney Fisher as she moved toward the batters’ box. The umpires eventually ruled interference on the play and Brock was called out.
ConVal coach Jim Coppo protested the call, but in the end he did not need to. Fisher walked and Bryanna Lindsay followed with an RBI single to plate Mackey. The throw went to the plate, allowing Fisher and Lindsay to each advance a base. Senior Ana Hautanen then roped a double with two outs to score both runs and give ConVal a one-run lead.
“That’s where being aggressive paid off,” said Coppo. “They were resilient because they knew they could win.
The Generals had two on in the last of the seventh, but Mackey’s diving catch at short preserved the 4-3 victory.
“They went out and did what they needed to do to win,” said Coppo.
Hautanen collected the team’s only hit prior to the seventh with a third inning home run for a 1-0 ConVal lead, as she went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Freshman Sam Hanlon started the game, but after the Generals loaded the bases with no outs in the first, Fisher got out of the jam unscathed. She also worked out of a bases loaded situation in the second. John Stark scored twice in the fourth and again in the sixth.
