ConVal captures first win
Cougars defeat Pelham 10-3 after dropping seven in a row
It may have taken eight games, but the ConVal girls lacrosse team finally broke into the win column.
With Thursday’s 10-3 victory over Pelham, which also entered the game without a win, the Cougars snapped a seven-game losing steak that included five losses by double digits.
“It is something that will hopefully boost their confidence,” said coach Cher McClelland.
It was the third game in four days for ConVal, which lost to Kearsarge 17-3 in a night game on Wednesday after jumping out to a 3-1 lead.
“It shows the potential we have, but we need to hold it for 50 minutes,” said McClelland.
So the effects of a long week were evident in the early goings on Thursday. But despite having played less than 24 hours earlier, the Cougars were still able to jump out to an early lead and this time maintain it. ConVal led 6-2 at the half and never allowed Pelham to threaten over the final 25 minutes.
“I did feel bad for Pelham because I knew how they felt,” said McClelland.
Senior Haley Webber scored a season-high four goals to pace the Cougars, while junior Meghan Close added a hat trick. Autumn Cahoon chipped in two goals and Zoe Paige scored once.
Junior Lilly Grisafi made nine saves to earn her first win as the full-time varsity goalie.
ConVal hosts John Stark today.
