Cougars will send 4 to states
Throwers lead CV at D-II meet
While the ConVal track and field team did not bring home any individual state titles from the Division II Championships on Sunday, the Cougars will still be well represented at Saturday’s Meet of Champions.
Four throwers from ConVal finished in the top four of their events on Sunday to advance to this weekend’s state meet.
Seniors Tom Hughes and Nawyn Meas will compete in the boys discus. Junior Coty Cadorette qualified in the shot put and junior Megan Hardwick will throw in the girls discus.
Hughes, who won the Division II discus title last spring, finished runner-up in the event on Sunday. Hughes threw for 135 feet, 11 inches, which was less than five feet behind Portsmouth senior Ed French and over seven feet further than his winning throw from a year ago. Meas was one spot behind Hughes in the discus, reaching a distance of 122 feet, one inch. Hughes was also ninth in the shot put, reaching just 39 feet, 11.25 inches after winning the event during indoor track. Meas was 13th in the javelin throwing for 130 feet.
Cadorette threw 43 feet, 7.25 inches to improve three spots over last year to place second in the boys shot put and make his first trip to Meet of Champions. Cadorette was the third ConVal thrower to earn points in the discus, taking sixth with 114 feet, two inches.
Hardwick will also be making her first appearance at the state meet after earning the fourth and final qualifying spot in the girls discus by finishing with a distance of 93 feet, 11 inches. Junior Selina Baldwin placed 13th in the girls javelin with a throw of 87 feet.
Junior Haley Zanga was pushing for a second straight trip to the state meet in the 100-meter hurdles, but came up one spot shy. Zanga came in fifth in the preliminary round of the event and finished the final in the same position after posting a time of 17.27 seconds. Zanga was third in D-II last year.
Junior Riley Henry qualified for the Division II meet in multiple events, but chose to concentrate on just the 1,600 meters and finished seventh overall in 4:46.22.
Kyle Murray placed ninth in the discus and 15th in the shot put.
A pair of ConVal freshman competed in the girls 400 meters. Grace Bowman finished 10th in 1:04.52, while Teresa Morano was one spot back in 11th, with a time of 1:04.94. Freshman Daniel Kashulines was 15th in the boys 400 in 55.60 seconds.
The Division II meet was moved from Saturday to Sunday after days of bad weather. The top six from Saturday’s Meet of Champions will move on to the New England Championships on June 8 in New Britain, Conn. The top five from Division I and top three from D-II also qualified.
Meet of Champions will be held at Londonderry High School on Saturday beginning at 2:30 p.m.
