Vikings lose late lead in 1st round
Bishop Brady scores 3 in bottom of 7th
The Mascenic softball team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday with a 9-8 loss at Bishop Brady in the opening round of the Division III playoffs.
The Vikings, who were the 20th seed and the final team to make the D-III tournament, never trailed in the game until the Giants scored three times in the bottom of the seventh, including the game-winner on a wild pitch.
“It was a very exciting game,” said coach Frank Cadwell. “The girls played a great game.”
Mascenic had scored twice in the top of the seventh to take an 8-6 lead. Senior Erin Scollans tripled and then scored on senior Casey Thoel’s two-run, inside-the-park home run.
But Bishop Brady plated three runs in its final chance despite not registering a hit. Three walks by Mascenic senior Katelynn Kelleher loaded the bases with one out and freshman Lizzie Brassard’s pick off attempt at third base went into left field, scoring two runs and to tie the game at eight.
“It was 8-6 with one out in the seventh,” said Cadwell. “It’s a tough way to lose.”
Mascenic took a 3-0 lead in the first thanks to Thoel’s two-run triple. The Giants scored twice in the first and one more in the third to tie the game at three.
Junior Liz Martel’s pinch hit double in the fourth drove in a run and freshman Casey Wayrynen knocked in two with a double to give the Vikings a 6-3 lead. But Bishop Brady once again came back with two in the fourth and another in the sixth.
“They chipped away at us all day,” said Cadwell.
The Vikings finished 6-13 and Wednesday’s playoff game was the fifth one-run game of the year. Mascenic loses five seniors.
