Cougars pick up first win in new gym, 3-1
The ConVal girls volleyball team picked up the first win in the school’s renovated gymnasium on Monday, defeating Wilton-Lyndeborough 3-1.
The victory put the Cougars at 2-2, matching the most wins in program history, achieved last year.
“It’s exciting to look at the standings on the NHIAA and see us in the middle of the pack,” said ConVal coach Jenn Merrill. “I thought this was going to be our best season yet.”
The loss for the Warriors dropped them to 0-4 entering their home match versus Trinity on Wednesday.
“It’s taking longer than I thought it would for them to start clicking and find their form,” said WLC coach Christie Stanley. “And it’s disappointing because I know what they’re capable of.”
WLC, which was down two starters, took the opening game in extra points, 26-24. It was the second time in the past three matches they had won the opening game.
“They actually played pretty well together,” said Stanley. “We’re usually big on digging holes early.”
But then it was ConVal’s turn. The Cougars won 25-13 in game two to tie the match and followed with a 25-18 victory to go ahead 2-1.
“They just dug deep. They had a better mental game,” said Merrill. “We ended really well that first game, even though we lost by two, and kept the momentum going.”
While the fourth game was closer, ConVal was able to pull it out 25-20.
For ConVal, it was the second time in three matches it had rallied to win after losing the opening game.
After traveling to Hillsboro-Deering on Wednesday, ConVal will host Mascoma on Friday.
WLC hosts Stevens on Monday.
