Things looked grim for the Orioles field hockey team on Tuesday afternoon. After Sanborn’s first-half goal, Conant played from a 0-1 deficit for the majority of the game. As the minutes ticked away, the Orioles grew more and more frantic, desperate to tie the game.

With under 10 minutes remaining, Conant turned up its attack to a new level of intensity. Seniors Kayleigh Johnson and Jess Sorby, along with sophomore Victoria Johnson, began a furious assault on the Sanborn net, rocketing shot after shot at the keeper.

That barrage eventually paid off; after a half-dozen or so shots in a handful of late possessions, Sorby located a loose ball in the goal area and snapped it home for the tie with just under six minutes to go in the game. Jubilation erupted from the Conant sideline.

The Orioles and Indians couldn’t muster any more solid chances before the end of regulation and the game went into overtime.

Conant maintained that late-game ferocity into the extra period with two early scoring chances that missed by about a combined four inches, but their elation and intensity was snuffed out in a heartbeat when a Sanborn forward found the back of the net, striking a ball past goalie Sarah Gonsalves and ending the game.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Orioles, who had just turned things around after losing three straight following the loss of their senior leader Heather Bilodeau.

“We are really missing Heather with her broken foot,” Orioles coach Leigh Webb said.

The team now sits at 5-8. Conant’s final regular season game is Friday at 4 p.m. at John Stark (1-11).
