Mascenic’s soccer team came in to Tuesday’s game against Pelham knowing that they were in a must-win scenario.

“I told the players, “Our playoffs start today,” head coach Dave Martinez said. The Vikings needed to close out their season with two wins to even have a shot at making the Division III postseason. And, for much of Tuesday’s game, their playoff hopes were alive and well. After an early Pelham goal made it 1-0, Mascenic’s junior standout Jared Stauffeneker evened the score off of a Ryan Aro assist. The Pythons were able to score twice more in the first half and brought a 3-1 lead into halftime.

That’s when things got interesting. The Vikings made it a point to get shots on goal in the second half; their non-stop assault had the Pythons reeling back on their heels and barking at each other over every missed assignment. At the 13:30 mark, Mascenic’s Damon Gibson sent a beautiful long ball from midfield through the Pelham defense for Stauffeneker, who used his stellar speed to gain possession and tap the ball into the net, making the score 3-2.

“My speed has been my key to my game all year round,” Stauffeneker said, “beating players to the ball. I just beat the goalie to the ball and passed it into the net.”

Stauffeneker actually had two more similar chances within the next two minutes of gameplay, both of which were just wide. Goalkeeper Matt Cyr kept Mascenic in the game for the rest of the half, making a breathtaking diving save at 9:15 to keep the score at 3-2. The Vikings just couldn’t score another goal, and when a Pelham forward tapped a rebound in with under two minutes left in the game, Mascenic’s playoff hopes were dashed.

“It was just one of those days where we just couldn’t get anything into the back of the net,” Martinez said after the game. It was the final home game for seniors Cyr, Brandon Gardner, Luke Moran and captain Sarah Sharp, who played this season on the boys team after the girls team was dissolved.

“It was a disappointment that we didn’t have a girls team,” Sharp said, “but it was kind of nice, actually. It just made me a better player, because it was more competitive and more aggressive.”

“Out of the three captains, she’s the team leader,” Martinez said. “I hate to lose her.”
