It’s been quite some time since the South Meadow School boys soccer team lost a game. Coming into Thursday’s Tri-County League DIII championship game against Hampstead, the team was riding an amazing 33-0-1 record in its last 34 games, dating back to last year’s undefeated championship run. Opponents will have to wait until next season to get a crack at breaking that streak, as SMS won its second straight title 2-0.

8th-grader Max Sturges led the way for SMS, as he did for the majority of the season. Sturges scored the first SMS goal with just under two minutes remaining in the first half; he went on to seal the deal with another in the second half. Sturges very nearly completed the hat-trick when he took a penalty kick after a controversial Hampstead handball in the box, but his kick sailed wide.

The SMS defense was staunch, allowing but a smattering of Hampstead shots on goal. The team only allowed 10 goals the entire season while scoring 93.

“The teams soccer IQ was very high and the kids were very coachable,” head coach Tod Silegy said. “I would not trade this team for anything.”
