The WLC boys started off their season on the right foot on Friday night with a 77-43 rout of Hinsdale in which the Warriors led wire to wire. WLC started off the game on a 13-0 run and took the first quarter 26-6 on the strength of a tough press for which Hinsdale simply had no answer.

“That’s the hope,” head coach Ken Garnham said after the game, “that if we put pressure on and catch a team unprepared, a team not used to it until they make some adjustments, we can get out in that lead. I think that changes their confidence and what the other team wants to do. Sometimes it works, but it’s a two-edged sword. I’ve used presses before on teams that have good ball-handling and it backfired.” Senior guard Kyle Pratt led the Warriors with 26 points on 10-for-12 shooting. Pratt also had five rebounds and six assists. Junior Jordan Litts was also instrumental in the win; he used his athleticism to hound the passing lanes and get to numerous loose balls and tough rebounds. Litts finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and eight steals.

Litts and Pratt combined with backcourt mates Colton Salisbury, James Edmunds and Matt Ducharme for a night of exceptional guardplay that Garnham hopes will continue as the season moves along.

“They’re fast, aggressive players and they complement each other,” Garnham said. “It’s a very strong backcourt and very deep. We shot extremely well and we ran well, and that’s we want to do. We’re going to be an outside-shooting, running team, pressing and pressure and all that, and that’s what we have to do, because we’re not a particularly big team.”

Sophomore center Duncan Rae held his own against Hinsdale’s sizable but unpolished freshman center, 6’6” Kyle Rideout, rendering him a non-factor. Rae and the rest of the WLC frontcourt will face a much bigger test on Tuesday night when they host preseason favorite Derryfield at 7 p.m. Derryfield boasts four returning senior starters, including 6’7” center Roger Larrivee.

“I think that they’re the team to beat in class S this year,” Garnham said. “They’ve got a big team, they go 6’7”, 6’6” and they’ve got a very good guard and they’re deep. It will be a very good early season test for us.”
