Letter: Cruelty is the policy

I cannot get my head around a country that allows the world’s richest man (someone who was never elected to any post, by the way) to randomly slash important programs that protect our most vulnerable citizens. (Tuesday, April 15 “Cuts affect local food pantries”).’
Among the many critical programs Elon Musk and his team of twenty-something interns have completely eliminated are USDA Local Food Purchase Assistance, which supports food panties and Meals on Wheels and supports farmers by purchasing their produce, along with 100% of USAID food assistance to residents of foreign countries suffering from drought, famine and starvation.Perhaps people can make themselves comfortable with the thought of starving people in foreign countries, but what about the one in 10 people in New Hampshire who suffer from food insecurity? Are they fine with them suffering as well?
Meals on Wheels -- really? Is this what people wanted? These are our friends and neighbors. Do people really think the $1 million cut from New Hampshire’s food pantries is going to affect the federal budget deficit in any way? For those who voted for this cruelty, they must be very proud.
