On Saturday, the New Ipswich Fire Department welcomed seven new members into its ranks in a pinning ceremony and celebrated three promotions of existing members.
“This morning, we come together to celebrate the dedication, accomplishments, and spirit of service that define this department,” said Fire Chief Ben Hatcher during the ceremony. “The pinning ceremony is one of the most meaningful traditions in the fire service โ a moment to recognize the commitment of our firefighters, the achievements of our newly promoted officers, and the unwavering support of their families and loved ones.”
The ceremony welcomed new fire service members Drew Anderson, Greg Bruno, Keegan Card, Tyler Card, Cathy Murray, Ryan Murray and Gary Somero.
“Each of these new members has completed the necessary training, shown dedication to learning the craft, and demonstrated the character and courage it takes to be a firefighter,” said Hatcher. “Theyโve made the decision to serve others, to stand ready when called, to help those in need, and to be there on someoneโs worst day. That decision alone says so much about who they are.”
The ceremony also recognized new leadership roles for members of the department, including Peter Kelleher, who was promoted to fire inspector, as well as Mark Tapply and Katelynn Vaillancourt, who were both promoted to the rank of lieutenant.
“These promotions recognize not just experience and skill, but the ability to lead โ to teach, to mentor and to inspire others,” Hatcher said, after announcing the promotions. “Leadership in the fire service is about more than authority; itโs about service, example, and responsibility. I have no doubt that each of you will continue to represent this department with honor and pride.”

Hatcher spoke about the significance of pinning on a firefighter’s badge and the trust it represents.
“Trust from your fellow firefighters, from this community, and from all those who rely on us in their most difficult moments. It symbolizes a promise โ to be there when called, to act with integrity, and to serve with compassion,” Hatcher said.
Hatcher also thanked the families of department members, calling their support “essential to what we do.”
