Letter: Of tariffs and taxes
To the Editor,
Did you know?
The primary reasons for the establishment of a federal income tax in 1913 were to:
1. Increase federal revenue to support a growing government and its programs
2. To create a fairer tax system that shifted the burden away from prominent, regressive tariffs, which disproportionately affected the poor, and onto wealthier individuals.
This is exactly the opposite of what is going on today.
