Plastic food packaging risks
I love to go out to dinner and bring home any leftovers. I always bring my own containers because many restaurants provide only plastic (or Styrofoam) containers that are not safe.
Putting warm food into plastic or Styrofoam containers causes chemicals from those containers to leach into the food. The heat causes the reaction, and if the foods have a high fat content, the leaching problem is even worse.
Never microwave food in plastic or Styrofoam containers. The heat generated by the microwave will cause the same chemical leaching problem. And that same problem occurs when you use plastic film for a cover.
Donโt choose plastic containers labeled with “Microwave Safe.” The label has nothing to do with food safety. It only means the container will not melt or warp inside a microwave.
I bring my own metal, glass or silicone containers with me to restaurants. And if I need to cover food in the microwave, I use a 100% cotton cloth, a silicone lid or a microwave-safe saucer.
If I notice that the restaurant provides non-paper containers, I politely ask that they switch to paper containers. I encourage you to do the same.
Letโs work together to eliminate the risks posed by plastic used in food packaging. Our health and our environment will be better for it.
