Dr. Christina Cliff, a political science professor at Franklin Pierce University, spoke to the Jaffrey-Rindge Rotary Club on Feb. 12 about misinformation and disinformation.
Cliff explained how deep fakes and intentionally false content can mislead the public and deepen societal division. She said false stories often spread more quickly because they provoke strong emotions and capture attention.
Cliff also warned that the ease of online platforms allows images and videos to be edited or taken out of context, increasing the risk of deception.
She encouraged attendees to strengthen their media literacy and verify information with several trusted sources before sharing it. Without careful thinking and personal responsibility, she said, fake news can harm communities and personal lives.
