Interdisciplinary artist and composer Zain Alam will present โ€œArtful Immersion: Interlocking Rhythms of Time in Muslim Lifeโ€ on Friday, March 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Monadnock Center for History & Culture, opening the 2026 MacDowell Downtown season. A reception prepared by Chef Erik and the MacDowell Kitchen will follow.

Born in Flushing, Queens, and raised near Atlanta, Alam is an artist of Hindustani origin whose work explores whether sound can convey meaning beyond language. He will lead the audience through two three-channel audiovisual installations:ย “Meter & Light: Day”ย (2024, 20 minutes), presented in galleries from New York City to Fez, Morocco, andย “Meter & Light: Night,” commissioned and premiered in 2025 at The Shed in Manhattan.

Grounded in graduate work in Islamic studies at Harvard, Alam uses digital processing to transform vocalization and percussion into devotional sound paired with cinematic imagery. The event is free and open to all; advance registration is encouraged.
