At the polls Tuesday, Mascenic students had decisions of their own to make โ from end-of-year parties to a teacher sumo wrestling showdown.
While voters across the Mascenic district voted on town and school district issues, students cast ballots of their own in the districtโs first-ever โKids Vote.โ
Students at each school voted on issues tailored to their grade levels.
At Highbridge Hill Elementary School, students decided how they would celebrate the end of the school year, choosing between a barbecue or an ice cream party.
Boynton Middle School students voted on whether to add a line to the districtโs dress code allowing hats to be worn โas a privilegeโ at the middle school level.
Mascenic Regional High School students voted on the lineup for a teacher sumo wrestling match scheduled for April. Students selected which teacher they would like to see face off against Principal Gregory Pickering and chose a second matchup between two teachers of their choice.
Children who were too young to attend school were also able to participate, voting for their favorite cookie โ either Chips Ahoy or Oreos.
Classrooms across the district used the activity as a teaching moment to provide lessons about civics and voting. Students were required to check in and cast their ballots behind a voting screen, mirroring the process they will use as adults.
