The 10th annual Hope for Nica 5K Saturday continued the Hope Fellowship Church’s ongoing mission of supporting Nicaraguan children in getting a education.

The annual race typically raises about $20,000 for Jardin Infantil y El Padul in Managua, Nicaragua, a school that supports children who would otherwise not receive an education due to their family situation and economic hardship. The school runs entirely on donations.

Marla Somero, the director of the Hope for Nica 5K, said while the race has reached its 10th year, the church has been supporting the cause for almost twice that long, and sends about $30,000 each quarter in support of the children. In addition to special fundraisers like the 5K, church members also support individual children through sponsorships of about $600 a year, which provides education and a meal every day for the child.
