Peterborough American Legion schedules flag-retirement ceremony

Published: 5/23/2022 12:00:56 PM

American Legion Cheney-Armstrong Peterborough Post 5 will be retiring flags Monday, June 14, at 10 a.m., rain or shine in Depot Square in Peterborough near the gazebo.

The purpose of the ceremony is to encourage proper respect for the American flag and provide for disposal of unserviceable flags in a dignified manner, by burning. Resolution No. 373, approved by the National Convention of the American Legion meeting in Chicago in September 1944, re-emphasized the purpose of proper public flag disposal ceremonies and encouraged greater use of this ceremony by the American Legion.

Post 5 Peterborough has been collecting flags from Peterborough, Hancock and Dublin for the past  year. In Peterborough, there are three drop off receptacles: the Peterborough Town House lobby, South Meadow School entrance and Peterborough Recycling Center. People can also bring flags to Depot Square June 14 for a proper retirement.
