A Mason man arrested after shooting his neighbor’s dog said he felt threatened by the animal, according to a report by state police.

Colton Skorupan, 39, told police that he shot the mixed-breed dog on Oct. 15, after it threatened him and his 6-year-old son.

The shot was a clean “through and through,” according to the release, and the dog, named Travis, survived the shooting.

Skorupan and the neighbor who owns the dog disagree whose property the dog was on when the shooting occurred.

While Skorupan claims the dog was on his property, the neighbor and Travis’s owner disagreed. She says she called Travis when she heard a gunshot and the dog arrived “seconds later,” indicating that he was too close to be off the fenced property, the release states. The press release did not name the dog’s owner.

There is a 500-foot difference between where Skorupan said the shooting took place and where the neighbor claimed it to be. The incident occurred in a heavily wooded area and investigators were unable to retrieve any physical evidence to support where the shooting took place.

An arrest warrant was issued for Skorupan after an investigation. He turned himself in on Nov. 5.

Skorupan told police he was not aware he hit the dog until being confronted by the neighbor.

He also said, according to the release, that he has had problems with the neighbor’s dogs in the past, and described them as aggressive.

Skorupan’s charge is cruelty to animals. Chapter 644, section 8 of the state criminal code dictates that cruelty includes “acts or omissions injurious or detrimental to the health… of any animal.”

He was released on personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to appear in Milford court on Jan. 23, 2017, at 12 p.m.
