Antrim resident Daniel Thibeault was arrested Monday on one felony charge of arson in connection with a fire that occurred at the Maplehurst Inn Dec. 29.

Thibeault, 25, was released on personal recognizance bail, according to the Antrim Police Department, Antrim Fire Department and the state fire marshal. His arraignment date in Hillsborough County Superior Court has yet to be set.

According to Antrim Fire Chief Marshall Gale, the fire occurred the evening of Dec. 29 and was reported as fire in the walls.

“We found a fire up on the third floor hallway on the north end of the building,” Gale said. The fire had been partially extinguished  by a tenant in the building, and responding crews finished putting it out with a dry chemical extinguisher.

“The fire was suspicious in nature, so obviously an investigation started right away,” Gale said.

No information is available at this time on what led to the arrest of Thibeault, as the investigation is considered active and ongoing.

According to Gale, there were no injuries as a result of the fire, and the alarm system worked as expected, so responding crews found the building’s occupants already evacuating upon their arrival.

“It was minor damage; it was just really alarming,” Gale said, pointing out that the inn was built around the turn of the 18th century and is made mostly of wood. “Any fire in that building could be catastrophic, and the building is occupied. Many of the rooms are rented out at this time, so there’s quite a few folks in that building.”

Gale said that he expected more information on the investigation would become available as it continued.
