The Antrim Parks and Recreation Department has added a new area to swim laps at the Gregg Lake Beach.

The idea came about when the department was working to move the floating dock to a deeper area of the lake, said Recreation Director Celeste Lunetta Monday.

A deeper spot was never found, but the floating dock was moved to a new spot, which allows swimmers to jump off two sides of the dock instead of one. Lunetta warns, however, that people are still not to dive off the dock as the water is only 5-foot-11-inches deep in some spots.

“It has been a popular change,” said Lunetta. “People have given us a lot of positive feedback.”

The alterations this year have further complimented a change last year when the department created an area for pets to swim and for kayaks and other paddle crafts to launch.

Although creating a new space last year for kayaks and pets eliminated five parking spaces it addressed potential safety issues as it moved the people and pets away from the boat launch and boats coming in and out of the water.

“It was not a good mixed use,” Lunetta said.

It was becoming difficult for boats to launch and return with dogs swimming around the boat launch area.

The new changes have created four key areas at the beach: the boat launch, an area for pet and paddle crafts, a picnic area and the beach.

Lunetta said changes made at the beach are generally a response to employees observing how people use the space.

“We want to make the beach as safe and enjoyable as possible,” Lunetta said.
