Three charged with violent home invasion in Peterborough

PETERBOROUGH — Three young men, ages 17 and 18, are facing felony charges after they allegedly broke into a Lounsbury Lane home early Monday morning and attacked a 17-year-old boy who was sleeping in a basement-level bedroom. One of them was carrying “a rifle of some type, most likely a shotgun,” according to an arrest affidavit filed Wednesday at the 8th Circuit Court in Jaffrey. The victim told police that one intruder tried to tackle him and a second hit him in the head several times with the barrel of the gun.

The victim told police he recognized his attackers and identified them, which led to the arrests of Austin Cadorette, 18, of Antrim, Dylan Cadorette, 17, of Bennington and Isaac Lyons, 17, of Antrim. The Cadorettes are brothers, according to Peterborough Police Chief Scott Guinard.

Both of the Cadorettes were charged with burglary, a felony-level offense, and Lyons was charged with conspiracy to commit burglary, also a felony.

“We do not believe this was a random event,” Guinard said on Wednesday. “We believe this individual was targeted. There is nothing to indicate anyone else is at risk.”

Guinard said the incident is still under investigation, but he was not anticipating filing any additional charges.

According to the arrest affidavit filed Wednesday at the 8th Circuit Court where the three men were arraigned, Sgt. Vint Boggis and Sgt. Richard Nelson of the Peterborough Police Department went to the Lounsbury Lane home after getting a report of a home invasion.

“Upon arrival, I saw a door smashed, glass and debris strewn about, and the victim... bleeding profusely from lacerations to his head,” Boggis wrote.

The victim told police he had been sleeping when he awoke to find three people with T-shirts wrapped around their heads in the room and one of them holding a weapon. According to the affidavit, the victim said the intruders asked him for money, then one attempted to tackle and hit him, while another one hit him repeatedly in the head with the gun.

According to Guinard, the victim recognized the three suspects and referred to them by name, at which point they fled the home.

At about 6:30 a.m., police officers from Peterborough, Bennington, Greenfield, Antrim and Hancock went to a South Bennington Road residence in Bennington where they arrested the Cadorettes and Lyons. In his affidavit, Boggis wrote that the suspects had blood on their clothes when they were arrested and that police recovered three rifles from the scene of the arrest.

The victim was taken to Monadnock Community Hospital, where he was treated for head, facial and hand injuries and later released, according to Guinard.

Guinard said the intruders smashed a basement window and then reached in to unlock a deadbolt in order to get into the house. He said nothing was taken during in incident.

At Wednesday’s arraignment, the Cadorette brothers and Lyons were each ordered to be committed to the Valley Street Jail in Manchester in lieu of $50,000 cash bail, with probable cause hearings scheduled for Monday at noon in the Jaffrey court. They were ordered to have no contact with each other or with the alleged victim and to stay away from Lounsbury Lane.

“He is a danger to the community. This was a violent crime,” said Boggis, who is prosecuting the cases for the Peterborough Police Department, as Austin Cadorette stood, choking back tears, before Judge L. Phillips Runyon III. Boggis had similar comments about Dylan Cadorette and Lyons. All three men said they understood the charges and declined the services of a public defender, saying they intend to hire lawyers.

The 17-year-old who was attacked is a senior at ConVal High School, according to his parents. ConVal officials were unable to confirm on Wednesday whether the Cadorettes or Lyons are current or former ConVal students.
