Woman, 88, airlifted after Route 101 crash with tractor-trailer

PETERBOROUGH — A New Ipswich woman was airlifted to a Massachusetts hospital Thursday, after her car was hit by a tractor-trailer when she pulled out of Old Street Road onto Route 101.

At about 4:07 p.m., Marion Kangas, 88, of New Ipswich pulled out onto Route 101 after stopping at the stop sign on Old Street Road, according to Peterborough police. Kangas’s 2002 Chevrolet Impala was hit on the driver’s side by a westbound 2000 Peterbilt tractor-trailer unit driven by Gary Hanson, 61, of La Crescent, Minn.

Kangas had possible head and internal injuries, and was taken by ambulance to Monadnock Community Hospital. She was later airlifted to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, Mass., for further testing. Kangas was listed in stable condition on Monday, according to a UMass Medical spokesperson.

Hanson was not injured in the crash.

Kangas’s car had extensive damage to the driver’s-side front and rear doors and quarter panel, and was towed. The truck had moderate damage to the front bumper and hood and was driven away.
