Rotarians hear critique of U.S. policy in Israel

PETERBOROUGH — In a talk given to Rotarians on Monday, Alison Weir blasted the U.S. media for showing bias towards Israel over Palestinians and the U.S. government for providing hundreds of millions in aid to Israel. Town Administrator Pamela Brenner wanted to know — what is the solution?

“I’m going to play the devil’s advocate. These are interesting facts, the points you’re making. I see no solution,” said Brenner. “I want a solution.”

Weir responded by urging the Peterborough Rotary Club to pressure their congressional legislators to stop U.S. aid to Israel.

“I don’t want my money to be used this way. That is the best thing for Americans to do. No money to Israel any longer,” said Weir. “Once they lose the backing [of the U.S.], they’ll compromise and negotiate,” she continued. “That’s the only way peace will ever come.”

Tom Westheimer of Peterborough, a member of the Peterborough Rotary, invited Weir to speak to the organization at the Monadnock Country Club . Weir is traveling to promote her book about Israeli-American relations, “Against Our Better Judgment.”

Rotarian Bob Hanson of Peterborough said he enjoyed Weir’s lecture. He said he would write to Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Rep. Annie Kuster, telling them the U.S. gives too much military aid to Israel and to support the plight of the Palestinians more.

Since 1948, Israel has received $112 billion in U.S. aid, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. Since the mid-1990s, the U.S. government has committed more than $5 billion in aid to Palestinians, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Weir is founder of If Americans Knew and president of the Council for the National Interest. Both nonprofits are concerned with the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. The Anti-Defamation League has branded Weir a prominent voice in the anti-Israel movement and said she employs anti-Semitic imagery in portraying Israel’s influence over America. Weir responded by saying the ADL defames anyone who speaks critically against Israeli policies.
