Avenue A Teen & Community Center has announced its back to school programs.

It will offer free roller skating classes Thursday, Sept. 7, 14, and 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Great Brook School gym.

Jocelynn Drew, from the Monadnock Roller Derby, will be teaching basic skating skills, transitions (180 degrees and 360 degrees), backward skating, footwork, stops and jumps.

The program is open to all middle school students and all skill levels and abilities are welcome. The center will provide skates to those who need them.

Students must have a signed waiver to participate. Email Avenue A to register.

The center will also hold a school club for middle school students that will begin on Oct. 4. It runs on Wednesdays from 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

A press release says the club provides an opportunity for middle school students (grades 5 through 8) to make new friends after school, develop social skills, healthy self-esteem, and confidence through a variety of activities in a supervised environment.

Teens can play games including ping pong, foosball, music, and art.

Snacks will be provided. Bus transportation from GBS to Avenue A is provided, and students can take the GBS late bus home.

The club costs $5 per week. Scholarships are available and no one is turned away because of an inability to pay.

Avenue A is also hosting a special celebration at Avenue A for the Write Out! Anthology Release Party on Tuesday, Sept. 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Teens who participate in the creative writing club have put together an anthology of poetry and prose that they have been working on all year. The teens have chosen to write out as a way of breaking down the stigma surrounding depression, anxiety, body image, gender identity, and other challenges youth face.

The center is asking people to come support their efforts by attending a live reading, a question and answer session with teens, and a book signing.

Light refreshments will be served.
