Letter: Warmington lied about abortion position

Many good people do not run for public office because of misrepresentations and, unfortunately, outright lies that are often condoned in the political arena. But, in politics, as in life, facts matter.

So, I felt it was important to let you know the truth about my position on abortion after CindeWarmington, one of the Democratic candidates for governor, wrongfully told the Ledger-Transcript that I want to take away women’s right to abortion in New Hampshire, and falsely suggested that I support a ban on abortions in our state.

This is the truth – I support and will not change New Hampshire’s current law, which protects women’s freedom to obtain an abortion for any reason up to six months of pregnancy and in the last three months for medical emergencies and fatal fetal anomalies. As governor, if the Legislature sends me a more restrictive bill, I will veto it.

I understand that CindeWarmington will say anything to get elected, but it is not right for her to scare women in New Hampshire by lying about my position. When it comes to an issue as sensitive as women's health, the truth matters.

I urge the media to check their facts before printing one side of the story and to give candidates the chance to respond when someone directly attacks them and lies about their position on such a serious issue.
