Mansfield Public Library sets Baynes presentation

Mansfield Public Library will host Mary Kronenwetter for an illustrated lecture titled "Ernest Harold Baynes: New Hampshire’s Own Doctor Doolittle" Thursday, April 3, at 7 p.m. at Temple Town Hall, 19 Main St.

Kronenwetter will explore Baynes' legacy as a self-taught naturalist, writer and lecturer. Known for his work on animal behavior, bird and bison restoration and vivisection, Baynes was an early 20th-century conservationist who shared his home with a variety of wild animals. His writing and lectures on wildlife protection influenced national conservation efforts, including the founding of the American Bison Society with the support of President Theodore Roosevelt.

The lecture will also feature archival Baynes photographs from the Plainfield Historical Society collection. The event is free and open to the public, made possible by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities.
