A brand-new 2021 Jeep Gladiator was pulled from Powder Mill Pond in Greenfield early Monday morning after being stolen from a driveway in Peterborough the night before. Peterborough police have suspects, and they believe the incident is connected to a second car theft on the same night.

A kayaker spotted a submerged vehicle in Powder Mill Pond near the covered bridge in Greenfield and reported it at 6:12 a.m., just minutes after the vehicle’s owner reported it missing from his driveway on Currier Avenue in Peterborough, according to accounts from Wilton Ambulance Director Sherry Miller and Peterborough Police Chief Scott Guinard.

A Greenfield Fire and Rescue member went into the water and determined nobody was inside the vehicle, which was submerged up to its roof, at which point it was towed out of the pond and brought down to the Peterborough police station for processing.

A second vehicle was reported stolen from a driveway on nearby Hall Court at 7:30 a.m., where its owner, a Maine resident, had been visiting family, Guinard said. That vehicle, a 2012 Mazda, was found parked along Burke Road shortly after, he said. Both vehicles had been stolen at some point  during the previous night, Guinard said.

Police believe the two thefts are connected, and they have suspects but have not made any arrests yet, Guinard said. The Jeep is likely totaled, he said.
