Cathedral of the Pines is expanding and overhauling its Hilltop House, to accommodate its growing popularity.

“The Cathedral of the Pines and the Trustees have been considering renovations to the Hilltop House for several years, and now we’re underway,” Cathedral of the Pines Board of Trustees member Greg Walsh said Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Cathedral of the Pines was approved by the Rindge Planning Board to build a two-story, 1,176 square foot addition onto its main building, which is used for public events.

Bob Pettegrew is leading the capital campaign to finance the addition, plus extensive renovations to the Sloane Room, where large gatherings are held, and the entrance foyer. Pettegrew said Wednesday the improvements are long overdue.

“There are many different activities where people come and use the grounds, such as weddings. Those are expanding dramatically in their number. The facility of the Hilltop House is just severely lacking and needs major updating,” Pettegrew said.

It’s the most significant renovation project for the Cathedral of the Pines in 50 years. The total cost of the upgrade is estimated to be $670,000. The capital campaign to pay for the renovations is underway, Pettegrew said. The project has already started and is expected to be finished by the time the Cathedral of the Pines opens for the season in May.

Most brides are interested in the outdoor venue at the Cathedral, but in case of inclement weather, the event moves to the Hilltop House.

Walsh said some brides waver when they see the interior options, which are usually too small or not well enough lit for their needs.

The addition will include a new administrative office, a catering room, and expanded bathroom facilities and extra storage space.

In the Sloane Room, a wall will be knocked down to expand the main room, and both the Sloan Room and the foyer will be updated with new doors, windows, lighting, flooring, wall panels and heating and cooling system. The bridal suite will be enlarged, and the suite and clergy room will also be renovated.

“It’s really going to be a much better facility, without changing the feeling or the character, just a much more expanded space,” Pettegrew said.
