Kathleen Johnson isn’t fully moved in at her new Central Gold Key Realty office overlooking Main Street on the second floor of the Centertown building in Peterborough.

Although it’s on the list of businesses people would see if they walked by on the street, it doesn’t even have its own sign yet, and the furniture only recently arrived.

“We still have more stuff coming,” said Johnson, who is property manager for the building and will be running Central Gold Key’s Peterborough operation. “I’ve got tables and chairs, and I’m trying to get everything filed.”

Franklin-based Central Gold Key represents a new opportunity for Johnson that came about after she was on the opposite side of a Franklin home sale with Marsha Foden, Central Gold Key’s head broker. Johnson said she was in the process of getting her broker’s license – which would allow her to have agents work under her – and Foden asked if she would be interested in running a Peterborough office.

“She was pretty happy I was going for my broker’s license,” Johnson said. “I’m a salesperson. I’ve been a salesperson for 7½ years, and I want to be a broker now.”

A Massachusetts native, Johnson has lived in Peterborough for 20 years.

“I bought my first house here,” she said. “I have been working as an agent here. I love the Monadnock region. I think it has a lot to offer, not only Peterborough but the surrounding towns as well.”

Johnson also loves the real estate business.

“I love to see different house designs, different accents people have in the actual building. I like meeting people. I like sharing research and information with people,” she said. “There’s nothing better than getting someone their first home that they thought was unreachable.”

As Johnson builds Central Gold Key’s operations in Peterborough, she is looking for agents.

“If anybody is newly licensed or just looking for a change, they should call to see what we have to offer,” she said.

According to Johnson, Central Gold Key offers paid insurance and training opportunities, along with an easygoing atmosphere.

“It’s personal. It’s not competitive. We really want to take the time to help agents grow their business,” she said. “We’re really here to help. We’re not here to tell you to sell more or do more.”

Johnson believes the real estate market will be stronger this year due to lower interest rates.

“There are a multitude of programs for first-time home-buyers,” she said. “They shouldn’t give up. They should talk to their lenders.”
