When Dawn Dufresne and Heather Savage heard there was space available in the Terrapin Glassblowing Studio building in Jaffrey, it seemed like the perfect next step.

“It just made sense,” Savage said. After all, the two had been in the candle-making business together for two years and given the success they had already achieved and the need for more space, opening a storefront came with a lot of benefits. “It kind of all fell into place for us,” she said.

Chaotic Lily: Candles, Crystals, & Gifts has been open for just over two months and so far “it’s gone really well,” Dufresne said. While their homemade candles were the push to open the store, there is much more to see upon walking through the door.

“Candles are a big piece – candles and crystals,” Dufresne said.

While there will be a lot to take in, it will be the smell of their candles that is noticed first, and as Dufresne puts it, “it always smells amazing.”

In the center of it all is a crystal table, with each one bringing a different healing or empowering property. The duo has done a lot of research into what each crystal and stone means – and there’s definitely a connection that people make with them that cannot go unnoticed.

“We like to say the crystals call for you when you need them,” Dufresne said.

In addition to the crystals, the store’s inventory includes a number of local makers and creators, including wire wrapped jewelry from Witch Rock Jewelry, stained glass works by Sunset Luna Art, and shamanic rattles and drums. There are birch wood crystal grids, crystal creations, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, agatized river coral, hand-wired trees, metaphysical supplies and much more.

“For some of the people, it’s the first space they’ve been in,” Savage said. “And it’s nice to help them out with that avenue because that’s what happened for us.”

The candle-making began in the kitchen of Dufresne’s home. Then it expanded to include half of her basement and then the entire basement.

“We had 1,200 to 1,300 square feet taken up,” Dufresne said. Now the candles are made at the Jaffrey store.

It all started with the Intention line, made with soy wax and hand-poured 10 at a time. The colors and fragrances are carefully crafted to give each one the exact look and smell that the duo looks to achieve, while using herbs and crystals to complete the process. The candles are all-natural with no chemicals added because it’s about the quality of the product and not just making them for mass production.

“A lot of work goes into our candles,” Dufresne said.

They recently released a new chakra line and a zodiac series because there are just so many options in the creation stage that the possibilities are endless. They’ve also added a massage oil candle that can be placed directly on your hands.

They still sell their candles wholesale to almost 20 stores in southern New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Currently, they make about 300 candles a week, but sometimes that isn’t even enough.

“Sometimes we get an order for 300 and it knocks us out of our stock,” Dufresne said.

When COVID hit, things slowed down, and there was a lot of stock just sitting around. So they took to creating Facebook Live shopping events and it did really well. As interest grew, having a place where people could physically go and see and smell the candles was a natural progression.

Chaotic Lily hosted their first Festival Friday last week, which is held the first Friday of the month, and will include music and tarot readings, along with vendors and collaborations with their neighbors Terrapin Glassblowing Studio and Cafe 532, “and there’s plenty more to come,” Savage said. They also will host tarot readings biweekly by appointment.

Chaotic Lily is open Wednesday and Friday, noon to 6 p.m., Thursday, noon to 8 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

They said having Terrapin next door, another female-owned business, offers up a good vibe to the Hadley Road location.

“And I hope we can add to it,” Savage said.
