The Colby-Sawyer women’s lacrosse team will feature a pair of Cougars next spring, after two ConVal seniors signed their letters of intent last week.

ConVal midfielder Molly Dishong and goalkeeper Sarah Holdredge started their friendship long before either could pick up a lacrosse stick, nearly 15 years before they gathered in the ConVal athletics office with family and teammates last week for their dual signing.

“We’ve been best friends since kindergarten,” Holdredge said, “so we kind of have grown up playing the sport together. So we know each other’s styles. I think it’ll bring an interesting aspect to the team, already knowing someone and having that chemistry.”

The ConVal lacrosse program has produc ed  m ore than its fair share of college players over the past few years, but two high school teammates playing together in college is a rare treat.

“It's really nice,” Dishong said, “because we also connect really well on the field. We don't have to really be looking at each other to know what's going on.”

Dishong is a tireless midfielder who’s as tough a defender as she is a scorer, and Holdredge is an outstanding goalie who has amassed nearly 300 saves in just 34 starts (after Friday’s game, she was up to 266).

The Chargers are an NCAA Division III program competing in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. Colby-Sawyer finished 11-6 last season and graduated just two seniors.

Dishong, a multi-time state alpine skiing champion, will pull double duty at Colby-Sawyer, as she’ll also join the school’s Division I skiing program, which races at mountains around New England, from Sugarloaf to Stowe.

Last week also featured a soccer signing at ConVal, as senior Madeline Shippee signed her letter of intent to play striker at New England College next fall. Shippee is the latest ConVal player to make it to the next level in recent years, joining players like Nikki Bell (Misericordia), Sylvie Holding (St. Lawrence) and Kara Keiper (Colby-Sawyer).

Shippee said that the supportive ConVal soccer community has been key to the Cougars making it as collegiate athletes.

“The community is always really good,” Shippee said. “The girls on the team were always so supportive.”

Between injuries and the lost COVID season, Shippee spent more time than she wanted to on the sideline or off the field, and so she was eager and happy to keep her soccer career going in college rather than leave that void in her life.

Speedy senior striker Shippee joins a New England College team that competes in Division III’s New England Collegiate Conference. The Pilgrims went 7-10-1 last fall but made it all the way to the NECC championship game.
