ConVal announced Thursday that the district has reached a three-year contract agreement with the ConVal Education Association, which represents teachers, paraprofessionals and special service providers.

CVEA president Tom Morris said that the association was very happy with the agreement, especially since it’s a three-year agreement as opposed to a year-by-year contract that the district has used in the past.

“It allows us some stability and a chance to focus our energies in other positive ways,” Morris said. “The negotiations process was more collaborative than in years past, and we felt that both sides worked together to come to an agreement that benefited all.”

Superintendent Kimberly Rizzo Saunders said the agreement accomplished goals of all parties involved, and had many components that the district was pleased with.

“I think that the contract agreement made some progress on the salary front for our staff members,” she said. “It also provided a way for us to more competitively  pay some positions.”  These positions included occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists.

The new contract includes step salary increases based on each year of additional work experience, as well as percentage salary increases for educators who have reached the top step of the salary schedule. Also in the agreement are salary enhancements for special service providers who have a professional license and are certified by the state Department of Education.

Rizzo Saunders also said the contract increased rates for paraprofessionals who serve as substitutes. The agreement also increases contracted days for teachers and special service providers by one day, from 187 to 188. Teachers, paraprofessionals and special service providers will pay an additional 0.5% each year toward health insurance contributions over the next three years.

“It was a really great negotiation and things went really smoothly,” Rizzo Saunders  said. “Everyone participated, and I think everyone felt really good after the process was over.”

The contract agreement will take effect on July 1, 2022, to last through the conclusion of the 2024-2025 school year. It is subject to approval by the voters from all nine ConVal towns.
