The communications subcommittee of the ConVal school board is looking into the feasibility of a part-time communications professional for the School District.

“There are people who truly know how others receive information,” School Board member Nikki McGettigan said about the process in which the subcommittee began to consider the merits of a designated communications professional. She said members of the subcommittee recognized that a professional could be an authority on how to craft the messages the group is tasked with publicizing, and improve outreach through social media and mailing lists.

The committee introduced the concept to the School Board in November, and in their meetings cited the lack of outreach about school summer programs, as well as the lack of staff time currently available for outreach.

Superintendent Rizzo-Saunders and committee members are looking into whether the position could be funded through grants, or contracted services, McGettigan said. It’s too soon to tell whether a part-time professional could be independently funded or wind up as a future budget item, she said, but a skilled communications professional remains “needed in the district.”
