ConVal released reopening plans for the District on Friday, which feature five-day in-person instruction for students K-8 and alternating four-day weeks of in person and remote instruction at the high school, with Fridays as a flex day. The plans detail the structure of the school day for students opting for in-person and remote study, methods for preventing the transmission of COVID-19, conditions under which components of the School District would return to remote learning, and a new school year calendar aimed at minimizing community transmission surrounding holidays.

The plan is designed to minimize contact between students and staff in such a way that, in the event of a COVID-19 outbreak, quarantining a single “pod” of students or a school building may be feasible rather than shutting the whole district down, ConVal Superintendent Kimberly Rizzo Saunders explained at the School Board’s working session Thursday night. Each school in the district will be assessed on a daily basis and assigned a color code based on the presence of COVID-19, from no detectable community transmission to substantial uncontrolled transmission. Remote learning would resume for all students and staff if the CDC recommends to shelter in place, Rizzo Saunders said.

Students attending school in-person will be screened at the door for their temperature and asked screening questions when they arrive, with students showing symptoms being sent home after waiting in a designated space in the school.

Rizzo Saunders or School Board members can receive feedback on the plan before the School Board will finalize and vote on it at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 4. Every local school will offer an opportunity for parents to meet with staff to discuss the plan on Aug. 5-8. School resumes on Sept. 8 for all students and parents are requested to indicate whether their child will return to school in person or remotely by Aug. 14.
