The Souhegan Sabers boys’ basketball team is heating up, and has no plans to cool down.

On Tuesday night, ConVal was the latest to fall to the undefeated Sabers, losing 51-40 in their first matchup since Souhegan scored a 53-51 win in last year’s Division II state championship. With the loss, ConVal fell to 3-1 on the season.

Souhegan maintained control of the game through all four quarters, as senior Matt Canavan had 23 points on the night. ConVal fought hard to minimize Souhegan’s double-digit lead in the second half, but wound up losing by 11. Joe Gutwein led ConVal with 11 points, and Noah Stewart had nine.

After beating ConVal in last year’s state championship, Canavan said him and his team were confident going into Tuesday’s matchup.

“We expected the win tonight and we knew we were the favored team,” said Canavan. “It feels good to get the job done.”

ConVal will next travel to Merrimack Valley High School Friday at 6:30 p.m.
