ConVal is seeking volunteers to serve on strategic planning subcommittees as the district begins its next five-year plan.

For residents who have been concerned about the school district’s budget, this is “absolutely” a good way to get involved, Superintendent Kimberly Rizzo Saunders said.

The District’s current strategic plan was created in 2016 and ends in June. The upcoming plan focuses on bouncing back from the COVID-19 pandemic disruptions and involves reopening the schools, addressing learning losses that might have happened since March 2020, and applying lessons learned during the pandemic to develop new programs and strategies.

“Everything is on the table,” ConVal School Board Chair Tim Theberge said. Subcommittees are tackling academics, facilities, finance, personnel, co-curriculars, wellness, and technology, and volunteers will have the opportunity to contribute input and discussion on what ConVal will look like for the coming years. “We’re hoping with as much interest as there was in the budget, it would lead to as much interest and willingness to serve on this kind of group,” he said.

Preschool for All, outdoor learning, communication strategies, and opportunities for students to earn an associate’s degree or workplace certifications are all specific topics up for discussion. If selected, volunteers can expect to be assigned to a subcommittee and commit to at least five months of service, meeting weekly, although schedules may vary. An online signup form will be active through April 9, after which the School Board will make notifications to selected members.

“Planning for the future of the district can only be successful if we include all stakeholders in the conversation,” Rizzo Saunders said. Last summer’s reopening plan was as successful as it was because more than 100 people were involved, Theberge said. The last strategic plan didn’t involve a very broad group of contributors, he said, and the school is trying to be more purposefully inclusive this time around. “We’re trying to get a decent cross-section of ConVal,” he said, and value volunteers regardless of whether they are new or longtime residents, parents of students or not. More information on the Strategic Plan can be found on ConVal’s website.
