The ConVal unified soccer team’s quest for a second straight championship began in earnest Tuesday afternoon when the Cougars beat Keene in convincing fashion in the quarterfinal round of the NHIAA Division I playoffs.

“We’ve got a pretty good team,” said ConVal’s Andres Tourgee. “If we just keep playing the same way, work together, we should make it.”

The Cougars went 5-1 on the rain-shortened season, good for the No. 2 seed, and they looked the part Tuesday, taking it to the Blackbirds for a 9-6 victory. Tourgee had a hat trick, Dylan Coyne had a game-high five goals, and Garrett Shows added another.

The win was the sixth in a row for ConVal, who won out in the regular season after losing the first game to No. 1 undefeated Exeter in overtime, 3-2, giving the Blue Hawks a little revenge for last season’s championship game, where the Cougars beat Exeter on their home turf.

That championship win was perhaps the most special moment in a career full of them for seniors like partner Kalli Taylor.

“It’s super rewarding, especially winning the championship last year,” Taylor said. “I think we all got a lot closer. Now I’m friends with everyone and it’s great. I love seeing these guys every day.”

While the wins are rewarding, it’s the little things that keep the athletes and partners coming back with smiles on their faces.

“I love whenever Frank [Dinino] has the ball,” Taylor said. “Or when Garrett scores, he always pumps the team up. Those parts are probably my favorite.”

ConVal hosts No. 3 Oyster River on Thursday at 4 p.m.
