ConVal’s golf team edged out Conant on their home course to take second place at Thursday’s season-opening match at the Shattuck.

Junior Brady Proctor scored nine points out of the third position to lead the Cougars as ConVal tied with Conant at 25 points apiece under the Stableford scoring system, which the NHIAA implemented last year.

“I just really concentrated on every swing, and I got three pars in a row, which really helped me out,” Proctor said. “That was about 90 percent of my score right there, those three pars.”

Proctor won a free membership to Hilltop Golf Course this summer and played three or four times a week, which he said really improved his game, but the Shattuck’s a whole ‘nother animal.

“It’s a really tough course,” Proctor said. “I’ve played here before and did a lot worse than this...It’s tricky because I’ve just gotten to the point where I’m developing shots, I can start aiming and ranging my clubs to figure out their different lengths, and then this messes it all up, because you think you’re going to hit a shot and then it’s in a bush or it’s in a swamp. There’s like five obstacles on every hole.”

Expeditions into the swamp notwithstanding, Proctor’s score led ConVal, which also got strong performances from Nick Tower (7 points) and Max Heck (8 points), and Brigham Boice’s five points was good for the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Kearsarge won the day with 30 points, with senior Molli Mayo’s nine pacing the winning team.

Conant junior Hayden Ketola was medalist with 12 points, but after a summer featuring more concrete work than golf, the Orioles were still shaking off rust on Thursday.

“Pointwise, it was a rough day for everybody,” said Conant head coach and Shattuck golf pro Tom Borden. “It’s our home course and we need to take advantage of it.”

Jeno Saari (8 points) and Chloe Vaillancourt (5 points) were the Orioles’ other top performers on a mildly disappointing day that featured some three-putts and trips into the bog. But with a little practice, Borden said, Conant should be back on track.

“I think we’ll be all right,” Borden said. “My guys, in two weeks, we’ll be all set.”

Conant is at Belmont Thursday. ConVal is home at Crotched Mountain against Belmont, Fall Mountain and Monadnock on Tuesday.
